The Night Ocean

 In the dark night

I dreamt of deep waters

Rolling in mighty waves far from land

Waves rolling to other waves, no shore to crash along

Only humans dream of the shore,

The safe dry land to stand upon.

In the dark, surrounded by the deep,

there is no place for frail, fragile bodies made of flesh and bone.

Blood and sinew were never conceived of

strong enough to withstand the roiling waters.

The giant waves that clap together in joy,

Like the hands of God, in prayer to the great rolling silence

Disturbed only by the sound of the wind.

A lonely place, a lonesome place,

The waves and the sky, the depths and the heights.

In the beginning, they were here

At the last, they shall be the last

Before the Earth itself is again consumed

In fire and light, tearing itself to pieces

In glorious reformation.

Too soon returning the light from whence we all spring forth.

To dance for a short time.

Then return into darkness of that other world.

The inner world, deep as the sea itself, and

equally mysterious.
